Civil War Map: Union, Confederacy and Border States

Between December 1860 and June 1861, eleven Southern states left the Union and formed the Confederate States of America. Four slave states stayed in the Union as border states, and West Virginia split from Virginia in 1863. This map quiz helps students in grades 5–12 find every state and know which side it was on.

Practice one side at a time: pick Union, Confederacy or Border states. Guided mode colors each state by its side.

Sources and simplifications

States are drawn with modern borders. Kansas joined the Union in January 1861, West Virginia in 1863 and Nevada in 1864; all three are shown with the Union. West Virginia, a border state here, was part of Virginia until 1863; some books list it with the Union. The western lands were territories in 1861 and are shown in grey with modern state lines, not their 1861 territory borders. That includes Indian Territory (today’s Oklahoma), where several Native nations signed treaties with the Confederacy.
